| Emerging Leaders Institute |
The Emerging Leaders Institute is an innovative program that was designed by MAEOPP leaders who recognized the need to strengthen MAEOPP by developing potential leaders from within the Association. Initiated in 1989 by Dr. Celerstine Johnson, the program’s purpose was to identify and prepare MAEOPP members to assume leadership positions at the chapter and regional levels, to help those individuals grow personally and professionally, and to strengthen the Association.

| The Emerging Leaders Institute is a year long leadership development program that is designed to inspire and cultivate strong leadership within the association. The program's design combine professional development, networking opportunities, and hands-on experiences that prepare participants for greater involvement in MAEOPP and their respective chapters. |
Graduates of the Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI):
- Can expect a rigorous yet rewarding and meaningful training experience that will include understanding the history, purpose, and functioning of the MAEOPP Association
- Will be expected to assume leadership positions nationally, regionally, and locally (chapters) to include responsibilities such as chairing committees, holding office, and mentoring new professionals
- Will become more committed to their profession, the association, and students served
Does it work?
After 13 MAEOPP ELI classes have graduated, we can look back and see the success over the years. There are over 156 graduates, 40 have gone on to serve as Chapter Presidents. That translates to 25% of the ELI Graduates. Every chapter has had at least two ELI graduates serve as Chapter Presidents. The level of activity that has been gained from the participants trained has varied.
- Five of the last 8 MAEOPP Presidents have been ELI graduates
- The COE Board Chair is an ELI graduate
- The last five elected secretaries and two of the last three treasurers have been ELI graduates
